Touring Ofakim Israel: The Brave Story of Rachel and David Edry

Touring Ofakim Israel

Ofakim Israel

Nestled in Israel's southern district, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) east of the Gaza Strip, lies the city of Ofakim. Established in 1955, Ofakim was created as a central community to support surrounding rural settlements, providing essential services and employment opportunities. Many of its first residents were Jewish immigrants from Morocco and Tunisia, bringing a vibrant cultural mix to this desert town. Fast forward to 2023, and Ofakim is home to approximately 30,000 people who enjoy its peaceful desert ambiance, enhanced by easy access to nearby cities like Be’er Sheva, just 24 kilometers (15 miles) away.

While Ofakim’s early economy thrived on textile manufacturing, the global economic shifts of the 1980s led to the closure of many factories, challenging the community. But like the desert itself, the city adapted. Today, Ofakim’s economy is powered by small businesses, light manufacturing, and a budding technology sector. With ongoing government support, the city’s infrastructure, educational resources, and transportation options have steadily improved, making it an appealing choice for families looking for a quieter way of life with all the essential amenities.

October 7, 2023: A Day that Tested Ofakim’s Resilience

On October 7, 2023, Ofakim experienced an attack that left an indelible mark on the city. In a large-scale assault across southern Israel, about 22 Hamas militants infiltrated Ofakim in two vehicles, aiming initially for the police station. A navigation error led them instead to the Kramim neighborhood, where they opened fire in residential streets, bringing terror to places like Hagoren, Hatamar, and Khita. For residents, the attack was sudden and unimaginable. People sought shelter wherever they could, while police and courageous civilians faced the attackers in intense battles that stretched over hours.

"In the massacre in the city, 27 residents were murdered, and six police officers were killed, in addition to city residents who were killed in other places in the Gaza envelope. A total of 47 residents of the city were killed in the surprise attack, some during the battle and others in different locations in the Negev, such as the massacre of retirees in Sderot."

This assault was just one part of a devastating series of attacks that day, targeting multiple communities near Gaza. The tragedy of October 7 took lives, caused injuries, and left scars that will take time to heal. In the aftermath, community initiatives, local government support, and mental health services have been instrumental in helping residents cope and rebuild. Ofakim’s residents have shown incredible strength, refusing to let fear define their city.

The Heroic Rescue of Rachel and David Edry

Amid the chaos and fear, one story stands out as a testament to human courage and resilience—the ordeal of Rachel and David Edry. That day, five Hamas Nukhba terrorists broke into the elderly couple’s home, taking them hostage. Surrounded by police and special forces, the situation was tense and dangerous. Any move could have risked the Edrys’ lives.

But Rachel Edry, drawing on her knowledge of Arabic, took an extraordinary risk. Staying calm, she communicated with the terrorists, using her language skills to connect and de-escalate. At one point, she even offered them food and cookies, a gesture that, under the circumstances, showed unimaginable bravery. Through subtle hand gestures, Rachel managed to signal to police outside the number of terrorists in the house, giving critical intelligence to the rescuers.

After 18 hours, the Israeli police launched a precise, coordinated rescue operation. The terrorists were neutralized, and Rachel and David were unharmed. Their safe rescue became a symbol of hope, resilience, and unity for the entire community. The Edrys’ story spread quickly, resonating with people across Israel, and reminding everyone of the strength found in compassion, courage, and human connection.
