Tomb of Joseph of Arimathea Jerusalem - Christ's Devoted Disciple

Joseph of Arimathea’s Tomb
The Tomb of Joseph of Arimathea in Jerusalem is a significant historical and religious site that showcases the traditional first-century CE burial design. This ancient tomb, with its five small burial chambers, offers visitors a glimpse into early Christian burial practices. Located near the revered Tomb of Jesus, two chambers of Joseph's tomb are accessible today through a chapel situated at the western end of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, one of the most sacred sites in Christianity.
Joseph of Arimathea’s tomb holds a special place in Christian history and is revered as a significant site in the church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. This sacred resting place, as described in the New Testament, is located near the burial site of Jesus and the crucifixion hill(Golgotha). Joseph prepared his tomb in advance based on his needs, and today we rely more on a tradition that the cave where he was buried is located behind the tomb of Jesus, yet we cannot confirm the exact cave.
With five tiny burial chambers (Kuhim), Joseph of Arimathea's tomb is constructed in the architectural style of the first century AD. Currently, two of these chambers are open to the public and can be reached from a chapel located behind Jesus's tomb at the western end of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre (in front of the Coptic side).
The Biblical Narrative: Joseph of Arimathea’s Act of Devotion
According to the New Testament, Joseph of Arimathea, a wealthy and devout follower of Jesus, played a pivotal role in the burial of Christ. It is recorded that he provided his tomb for the burial of Jesus following the crucifixion. This act of reverence has forever immortalized Joseph of Arimathea’s tomb in the Christian tradition.
Where is the Tomb of Joseph of Arimathea Located?
Located in the heart of the Holy Land, Joseph of Arimathea’s tomb is believed to be situated near the place of Jesus' crucifixion - Golgotha, and Jesus' Burial place, at the renowned Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Once you enter the Church you have to turn left and pass the Auction Stone and the Armenian section, then continue to the back side of Jesus' Tomb which is controlled by the Coptic monks, and turn around, the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea is just in front of the Coptic entrance.
For the question of who owns the Tomb of Joesph of Arimathea, as the specific tomb within the church believed to be the burial place of Jesus, it is a common spiritual focal point for Christian pilgrims. Still, ownership is generally vested in the broader administration of the church(all 6 denominations share the place).
Joseph of Arimathea in the Gospels
Joseph of Arimathea holds a significant place in the narrative of Jesus of Nazareth. He was not only a secret follower of Jesus but also counted as a close friend. What sets Joseph apart is his dual role within the socio-religious landscape of Jerusalem. Not only was he a devout believer in the teachings of Jesus, but he also held a position of prominence within the Jewish Council, known as the Sanhedrin.
This duality in Joseph's identity casts a compelling light on the complexity of religious and political dynamics during that time. As a member of the Sanhedrin, Joseph played a role in the events that led to Jesus' crucifixion. It is worth noting that his friendship with Jesus remained largely clandestine, likely due to the controversial nature of Jesus' teachings and the potential repercussions within the council.
Joseph's pivotal moment in history came after the crucifixion of Jesus. Filled with compassion and a deep sense of duty, he mustered the courage to approach Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, to request custody of Jesus' body. This act of bravery underscored Joseph's unwavering commitment to provide a dignified burial for his cherished friend.
Matthew 27:57-60
"As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus... He went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and placed it in his new tomb that he had cut out of the rock."
