Nabi Musa is an 800-year-old building that is sacred to Muslims and is recommended as an easy stop on the way to the northern Dead Sea.
It is about a burial structure and a mosque, which the Muslims built in memory of Moses (Musa)

The building has two floors and is currently used as a Muslim khan, a mosque, and a small souvenir shop.
The building was built by Baybars, the famous Mamluk Sultan in 1265, and the building was used as a stopping point on the way of the Christians who marched from Jerusalem to Qasr el Yehud in the Jordan Valley.

It is possible that the small grocery that is located there today, provided them with food and drink and the khan served as a rest for them on their long journey.

What to See in Nabi Musa Today?

The Khan's building is covered with beautiful white domes, which in the early morning take on delicate shades of pink. In the center of the site, you will notice a large courtyard, a mosque, and cisterns that drain the rain.

You can find dozens of ancient and decorated rooms and the view from them is particularly spectacular. Outside the site in the northern part is an ancient cemetery.

The Legend of Nabi Musa

The Muslim version is very different from the version accepted in the world regarding Moses, in the version most of us are familiar with, Moses never entered the borders of the Promised Land after signing an agreement with God, but in the Muslim version, the story is different and very fascinating.

Moses walked into the Judean desert and met a man who was building a coffin. He asked him to lie down to take his body measurements to build a coffin for his client who was the same height and width. And suddenly he closed the coffin with Moses inside! He buried Moses deep in the ground and covered him with the ground very quickly without anyone suspecting it! It turns out that it was the angel of death who buried and killed Moses in the Judean desert, therefore according to Muslim tradition, Moses is buried in this place and since then has been a pilgrimage site for many Muslims for many years.

How to Reach Nabi Musa?

On the descents of Highway 1 towards the Dead Sea, a little after the Mitzpe Jericho junction, you will notice the sign pointing right to Nabi Musa and after a few minutes of driving you will recognize a single building on the left, with an access road to an arranged parking lot on the right.
It is recommended to buy a cup of coffee or a souvenir on the site to save yourself unpleasant surprises.
