Nazareth's Christian Sites 

1. Basilica of the Annunciation


The Basilica is the largest church in Nazareth and one of the most important Christian sites in the world. The basilica is built in a traditional location where the angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would give birth to Jesus, which is the most important news in the New Testament. The modern structure was built in 1969 by the Italian architect Giovanni Mozzio, on top of earlier Byzantine and Crusader churches. On the lower level of the church, you can see the actual Cave, according to tradition, this was the home of the Holy Family.

2. Saint Joseph Church


Close to the basilica in the same complex, St. Joseph's Church is built over the site that, according to the Christian tradition, was the carpentry of St Joseph, the father of Jesus. The crypt below the church contains ancient ruins, including what may have been the original workshop where Jesus worked with his father Joseph.

3. Greek Orthodox Gospel Church (Saint Gabriel Church)


The St Gabriel Greek Orthodox church marks another site linked to the gospel, according to another tradition. It was built over a spring known as Miriam's Well, where it is believed that the angel Gabriel first appeared to Miriam. The beautiful icons of the church make it a must-see site, and the ancient spring still flows beneath the church.

4. Mary's well


Near St. Gabriel's Church, Mary's Well is a traditional site where Mary used to draw water. While the current structure is a more recent reconstruction, it remains a significant place for pilgrims who come to drink the holy spring water and get as close as possible to the Mother of Jesus.

5. The synagogue church


This is a modest church, hidden in the old city of Nazareth, according to Christian tradition, it is located in the place where the synagogue where Jesus studied and preached as a young man was. Jesus reads from the scroll of Isaiah and later on, is rejected by his townspeople.

6. Mount Precipice (Mount of the Leap)


The mountain is located just outside Nazareth, traditionally linked to the event where the people of Nazareth tried to throw Jesus off a cliff after his sermon in the synagogue. Today the mountain offers a panoramic view of the Jezreel Valley and Mount Tabor.

7. The Franciscan Museum
