THE GERMAN COLONY IN HAIFA (HAMOSHAVA HAGERMANIT)

THE GERMAN COLONY OF HAIFA
GERMAN COLONY (HAIFA, ISRAEL) — DESCRIPTION
The German colony (or German settlement) in Haifa is located around Ben Gurion Boulevard, beneath the gardens of the Baha'i World Centre. It was founded in 1868 by Templer society members who purchased land outside of what was then Haifa specifically to establish a community here. The upper part of the Baha'i gardens provides an excellent view of the colony, which contrasts with the rest of the urban development with its sloping brick-colored roofs.
The Templars seceded from the German Lutheran Church, and their followers in Haifa worked in agriculture and trade until the Second World War. They were unequivocally offered to leave the city and country after its completion and the formation of the State of Israel, despite their open support for the Nazi regime.
Ben Gurion's main street has been transformed into a wide promenade. There are many coffee shops and restaurants in the area, and many of them cater to the European upper crust.
At the moment, the German colony, which has been transformed into a city quarter, is a popular spot for recreation and walks for both Haifa residents and visitors. They're looking forward to low stone buildings, cozy courtyards, and citrus trees. Many of the original houses were restored at the end of the twentieth century, and Ben Gurion's main street was transformed into a wide promenade. There are many coffee shops and restaurants in the area, and many of them cater to the European upper crust.
A cellar was traditionally dug in German houses, which is not common in other Haifa residential buildings. Today, these cellars are frequently used to store wines and other restaurant supplies. Take a look at the Rak Basar restaurant, for example, and you'll notice the wine cellar through the glass floor.
The Museum of the History of the City, which was founded in 2000, is located in a German settlement. This is the historical Templers' community house, which was built in 1869 and was the sect's first building in what was then Palestine. The structure is still being restored, but it now houses temporary exhibitions, including works by contemporary artists.
